Fall TV Round Up

My Fall 2010 TV Rundown: More Good Than Bad! A few shows have done their entire season while the rest are at the mid-term break.

Weeds-I really liked the direction this season started out in, but then it veered away from weed again. This show is really kind of all over the place, they really need to pull all the loose ends together and end the show this coming season (which it looks like they’re going to do). There is no where else for the show to go but to a conclusion. A lot of the best characters are gone, the same shit keeps happening. a resolution has to happen. The season wasn’t a total loss though, there was some good character developments with the kids and Nancy is really just a rotten person. Seriously, she should be dead with the stuff they’ve had her do. It does feel like I watch the show purely out of habit now though.

Hawaii Five-O-This turned out to be a fun show. I think I just like seeing Hawaii on TV the most because it looks so beautiful. But there are some good characters and stories going on here. My biggest problem is that it’s a CBS show. They all follow the same patterns and it sounds like the soundtrack is made by the exact same guy with a Yamaha keyboard. Things can get pretty corny.

The Event- Really promising. I liked the pace of the show at the start, but the last few episodes seemed to have slowed the pace up a bit too much for my liking. There is a clear understanding of how entrenched the aliens are in our society and we are at least hot on the trail of Leila’s sister (with some age related experiments on her). It’s still entertaining, there is a ton of unanswered questions, I have hopes they can keep it up for the remainder of the season.

Sons of Anarchy- Season 3 is complete and it was another solid season. Jax was on the hunt for his son all season, the club had some serious issues to handle at home on their own and it all came to a point in a fantastic season finale. There were some “really?” moments here and there (like Jimmy O’Phelan getting away in the apartment ambush) but I’m totally happy with the season. Still one of my favorite shows, great concept and fantastic characters with a cast to match.

Modern Family- Consistently funny, just a great sitcom in a sea of garbage (I’m looking at you Three and A Half Men).

Terriers- Great first season! The show starts with the suspicious death of one of Hank’s old friends and that story arc comes back for the last few episodes. I love the chemistry between Hank and Britt, the stories were really well made and it has that usual FX production standard behind it. Total treat for me to see Laura Allen as Britt’s GF Katie. She’s hot as hell and she was great on FX’s canceled series Dirt. Terriers took over Nip/Tucks time slot and I’m happy they made another winner. Totally looking forward to Season 2.

Always Sunny in Philly- Still one of the funniest TV shows around even if they are having an off season. It’s hit or miss from scene to scene but I still love The Gang to death.

30 Rock- This show keeps on trucking. So many great characters (Judah Friedlander’s character is getting the shaft this season though) and great subtle moments. The jokes come out flying in this show, it can be easy to miss one. Could you guys give Kenneth a break once in awhile? The poor bastard.

The Office- Now here’s a show I am definitely watching out of habit. It’s lost a lot of the charm it once had but at least they’ve pulled back the cast from being complete cartoon characters. I kind of just want to know how this season ends, I’m pretty sure I’m going to bail when Steve Carell leaves. Michael Scott is the whole point of the show.

Outsourced- I’ve really come to love this show. Interesting concept and holy shit is Pippa Black sexy. Are there any unattractive Australians? What the hell do they eat over there? Pippa is just a small part of the show of course so the laughs keep me coming back.

Fringe- Best sci-fi show on TV by far. Kicks Lost in the teeth on a consistent basis. I think I’ve liked every episode they’ve made. Even the bad episodes are still good. The plot is so interesting, they don’t hold back for too long and the characters have some of the best and most believable relationships on TV. The main cast is so good together! The SFX on this show are top notch too. The CG work is really well done and whoever is doing the practical make up FX are geniuses. Too bad it looks like FOX is trying to kill another one of it’s best shows. Half way through the season and it’s had 4 multi-week breaks. They’re moving the show to Fridays which is all but a death march and after 6 episodes are going to take another break! Complete garbage handling of this show, fix your shit practices FOX.

Boardwalk Empire- I watched this show at the start sole because of Steve Bescemi is the leading man. He rules. It was a slow burn, but the show really made something of itself. The prohibition era in the US is some fascinating stuff, so the background is ripe for great story telling. Really cool seeing early Atlantic City and who isn’t a fan of old school gangsters? I’ve never seen Michael Pitt before (he plays Jimmy), he’s one of the more stand out actors on the show for me. Michael Shannon brings the insane Agent Val Alden to life too. Curious to see where they go with this next year.

Dexter- Season 4 was going to be a touch season to follow. I think the plot of idea of the team of killers lead by Jordan Chase was a good one. Julia Stiles as Lumen was great casting and fit the right void in Dexter’s life. He loses his wife and here is a woman he can save, even after saving her life (by accident, but that’s how these things happen). It brought up a lot of moral questions for Dexter who seems to want to bend the Code any way he can. He feels he’s more human than his father ever thought, even if it means his true calling in life really forbids it. The attraction of a soul mate can be understood by anyone and Lumen could really be with Dexter and know everything and be okay with it. So I liked the fundementals of it and none of the side character plots of the season got in the way too much. It was a REALLY sloppy season though. They wrote holes the size of buildings all over the place. Mountains of evidence left all over the place at every crime scene. Too many coincidental places for Dexter to be found in and the cell phone use by all the guilty parties bordered on the absurd. Any kind of real investigation would have busted Chase and Dexter. The finale was such a cop out it really shocked me. At the very least Deb should know what Dexter does now. She was right there, there was absolutely no reason for her to let Dexter and Lumen go without at least seeing them when she did track them down. They wanted a clean bill at the end to keep the next season open for them to write anything, but it’s bullshit. Having Deb find out in the last episode would set up some amazing shit and they way they handled it was beyond stupid. Some real missteps that I hope they never repeat.

Board to Death- Season 2 turned out to be a solid one. Another cast I really dig and I never thought I’d see the day where I thought Ted Danson was awesome. With such a short season, it’s easy to keep it all killer and no filler. A noir-rotic comedy really is the best way to describe the show.

Eastbound & Down- Kenny Powers is a scream! Love him to death. Another quick hit show on HBO. It’s vulgar and hilarious, some of my favorite adjectives. If you’ve seen the first season, head full steam into this one, it won’t disappoint. The relocation to Mexico really worked and the story arc was great. Hopefully the can turn around another season faster than it took to get season 2.

The Walking Dead- Love it! Best zombie show ever! Sure it’s the only one but lets not be picky. The production on this show is simply awesome. Cast is great and the writing is mostly good. The dynamics between the survivors is the best part, it just gets corny when a person is just a straight up stereotype though (the racist, the wife beater). The balance of gore/action is pretty spot on and there is some crazy potential here. The comic gets almost unanimous praise so I hope they stick to the books as much as they can, why mess with a good thing? The last episode was a bit rocky but not enough to make me condemn the show like I’ve seen some do. I hope they don’t rush into production as it seems like there is a lot of unsettled waters on the crew side (the entire writing staff was let go). Get everything nice and solid and go balls out into this universe. Could be a fantastic long running show.

Welcome to August

Summer is whipping right by. July did prove to be pretty epic, lots of fun events happened for me.

I’m currently addicted to Starcraft II, along with a few million other people. It’s been a long time since I bought a PC game and it was near impossible not to pick this up, 11 year wait for the sequel to one of my favorite games of all time. It lives up to it which is a great relief.

Speaking of addictions, I recently finished watching the entire Xena TV show from the 90’s. I watched the first 2 seasons or so when it first aired and stopped for whatever reason. Since seeing Lucy Lawless on Spartacus, it made me want to revisit the show and Netflix has them all up on Instant. So 6 seasons later I can say it was a pretty good show. I think it took me 5 months to get through and I gotta say I’m kind of bummed it’s over. The ending was pretty satisfying all in all (pretty logical for the message and direction of the show), but the episode before the last one was atrocious. The show probably would have been better at 5 seasons. 22 episodes per season is a lot, and cutting out the filler and bullshit episodes probably would equal 5 full seasons. The episode I mentioned above flashes forward to present day to try and fill a gaping plot hole from season 3 or 4. It was terrible. That plot hole should have been addressed right when it happened, not 2 season later with a horrible plot device to try and explain it. The section taking place in the “world” of Xena worked but everything in present day was terrible. Season 6 also went a step above in dark tones and violence, it was a strange tonal shift. The sloppy writing really kicked in in Season 5 and whenever they ran out of actual episodes with real plots there would be garbage episodes to get them to the end of the season where they knew how they wanted to end it. So avoiding the rough spots, it was a fun show and 15 years later I still have a crush on Lucy Lawless.

My Weird Windows 7 NIC restart bug update: It seems to be gone again. 5 restarts and the network kicked in right away. Maybe it’s the new FIOS router?

Summer

After last years 3 week long summer, it’s good to see this year we don’t have to wait until July for great weather. Makes a big difference, it seems like everyone is happier with sunshine and heat.

The standard TV season is over, Lost is pretty much gone and forgotten. It wasn’t a bad ending, but the show pretty much collapsed under it’s own weight. Shame because the show started so strong. Breaking Bad on the other hand was probably the best show on TV this season. Maybe one weak episode out of 13 (with no breaks might I add) and even that episode was better than most other shows. 3 amazing seasons and going although I’m not sure how they’re going to get themselves out of the intense corner they are in.

I’ve watched some movies here and there, but nothing really special. It’s been a weak summer for movies so far, but Toy Story 3 should change that. I’ve watched more TV shows on DVD more than movies lately. Started Mad Men and it’s good, but I haven’t seen anything so far that seems to make people go wild for it. I’m only 6 episodes in so it’s still early. Watched season 1 and 2 of Party Down and I didn’t like it at first. The characters started growing on me so that made me stick with the show and I’m glad I did. There’s some good stuff in there (it’s about a catering company in Hollywood. My favorite actor from Freaks and Geeks is in it and there are a ton of cameos through out). Justified (on FX) had a great first season as well. I look forward to the second.

True Blood is back on and it remains as mediocre as usual. There’s a new show coming up on HBO about gangsters in old school Atlantic City that looks pretty cool, I need to remember to record it.

Played through Red Dead Redemption and really liked it. The Wild West setting really drew me in and for some reason it’s made me want to finish all the lengthy side quests. On the other side is Blur, an awesome real car take on kart racing by Bizarre Creations. Easy to hop onto that for awhile and have a good time beating on a dozen or so other people. I just started Dante’s Inferno which is basically God of War with a different theme. Seems competent an hour into it. Crackdown 2 is next in my sights, the demo coming out tomorrow will swing me on a purchase or a rental.

Eminem’s Recovey is a fantastic album. He’s shed most of his lyrical cliches and he’s better off for it. He’s got some brilliant rhymes to go with some really creative beats. It’s a much more positive album for him and it’s got a soul that was missing from Encore and Relapse.

Korn III: Remember Who You Are is less than a month away and I’ve got tickets to see them at Mayhem Fest 2 weeks later. Really looking forward to it.

A lull

Had a bit of a lull recently, I’ve seen a few movies on DVD, but none really worth mentioning. They haven’t been bad per say, just not anything worth writing about.

TV has been going strong, Spartacus finished, but I haven’t watched it yet. Fringe is back and is on a roll, been a great season. Fox really needs to stop taking shows off for weeks at a time and starting them up at seemingly random. Cable always crushes network TV channels in this regard. They worst thing you can do is make a popular show stop in the middle of a season. Whatever reason they have for it is completly outdated and does nothing to help shows. You get a fan base and you keep them happy. People are way too busy and there are way too many options today to make a show vanish for a month. And forget about moving an established show to a different day, that is another nightmare. Fox has shot too many shows in the head that way.

A bit of a lull game wise this month, but May is going to be unbelievable. It might be the biggest May to date for games, it’s looking like a holiday release schedule. I think I’m going to make a release list to show how crazy this summer is going to be.

Korn III: Remember Who You Are looks to have a release date now. July 13th, 2010. Later than I hoped, but that is a day before Mayhem Festival kicks off so the timing is right. I think a lot still has to be done to get it ready for release despite the album being done. The single, “Oildale” looks to hit the radio on May 3rd so that’s something to look forward to. I really want to hear the studio cut.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand, “Revelations”

With one episode left, just about every secret was let out of the bag on this episode. Some of the best fight choreography was on display here along with the brilliant writing, pacing and acting.

This show has been like a runaway freight train since episode 2, the premiere was basically just the train loading at the station. I can’t wait to see how they end this season, it’s been an amazing journey.

What I’m watching update

Last weeks episode of Lost was good, the problem is it was like 3 weeks late. More episodes like that please.

Spartacus! So good it makes me happy just thinking about it. Something important, major and intense happens every single episode. The whole show really revolves around politics, from the slaves to the politicians themselves. Gathering secret info on others, looking for outs out of problems, revenge moves, upper crust political movement, you name it.

Great fight choreography, sexiness all over the place. There’s 3 episodes left, I see Crixus taking a huge loss next that will unite him with Spartacus again, where they’ll take the steps to bust out of the Ludus that imprisons them.

Breaking Bad continues it’s title as best show on TV with it’s second episode of the season. The direction is really fantastic, film quality really. Couple that with brilliant writing, acting and careful editing and music decisions make this show tough to beat. The tension for the last 5 minutes was incredible.

I finished Bayonetta for 360 as well. Good action game, if a bit long. Looks good, but I hate the monster and boss design. Just ugly and stupid. Controls like a dream though, it’s worth playing.

What’s on TV?

With Nip/Tuck done, the show is officially out of my rotation. Now it’s Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, The Office, Archer (which just finished it’s first season, great adult cartoon). I’m still digging Americas Best Dance Crew, this season has had a very good mix of dance styles feels like a better season than last. ABDC has 3 or 4 episodes left now. FX has started their new show, Justified and I think I’m a fan. U.S Marshall played by Timothy Olyphant gets moved back to his home town to lay down the law. In typical FX fashion it has fantastic actors, writing and production values.

The Ricky Gervaise Show on HBO is a hoot, it’s his podcast animated. HBO also started airing The Pacific which is a war mini-series much like Band of Brothers. This time it’s about the time(s) just after the Pearl Harbor attacks. Don’t get a good feeling for any of the characters yet, seems to be a slower build.

I’m still with Lost, it’s not as gung-ho as everyone expected and wanted but I think it’s still enjoyable. I’ve stuck with it so long, I gotta see how they end it. The next episode is about Richard who at this point is the most mysterious character, we know next to nothing about him. Should be a lot of reveals. Spartacus on Starz is far and away my favorite show on TV right now. It’s basically 300 on TV and it has it all. Action, mystery, violence, nudity, cursing, gore. Everything I love pretty much. The acting is so good, and the writing is just out of this world. I can never guess what’s going to happen. The political backstabbing is off the charts. Liars and thieves constantly making moves to one up each other and the shit storm just keeps getting bigger and bigger. The 9th episode aired on Friday and was titled “Whore”. Never has there been a more appropriate title. I haven’t been knocked retarded from the end of a show since the first 2 seasons of Nip/Tuck! A second season has already been given the greenlight so that is awesome news. I’m constantly amazed at the momemetum that Spartacus has been able to maintain. The worst episode was the first one, they’ve been crafting this masterpiece of a story ever since without missing a beat. But the old champion enters the ring tonight!

Breaking Bad starts Season 3 tonight on AMC! So excited, it’s been a long break after last seasons stunner of a finale. So much to watch it’s crazy. Fringe starts back up in April too which also starts the months of awesome movies coming out and May is packed with AAA video games. Some crazy entertainment coming up in the next few months. This summer should be fantastic.

Nip/Tuck – Hiro Yoshimuri

S7E9
“You know I always wanted this to last forever.”

The final episode was a good one. It avoided doing a over dramatic, soap opera style murder spree or natural catastrophe to kill off characters. It was really like saying goodbye to friends. I knew Sean and Christian wouldn’t, and couldn’t last. It looked like death was going to be the only way for them to split and I was partially right. Christian was on his way to killing Sean eventually. Sean gave up, reserved himself to what he thinks was his only choice: tit jobs, booze and Christian standing nearby.

Surprisingly Christian cut the strings. He has to live with what he did to Kimber for the rest of his life (although saying he “eats souls” is pretty over the top) and he can’t let the same fate happen to Sean. He’s gotta push one love away so they can be happy and live. Their final patient, Mr. Yoshimuri was the mirror to Christian. In his golden years the guy was having fun, doing what made him happy, unflinching to the moment he died. It’s really impossible for Christian to really change, we’ve seen it time and time again. Christian has kept Sean from changing, from doing what he wants to do. Now I’m unsure if Sean is going to raise the child Ava left behind, but at the very least his new life has started.

Now, good old Matt! The true train wreck of the family. He can’t handle life by himself, he has to have a dominate person watch him and tell him what to do. He knows it. He can’t fight it. It was surprising that he actually managed to come up with a convincing argument for Ava to let him tag along. Who knows, maybe the two pieces of shit will be able to live together (doubt it). Matt McNamara will go down as one of the shadiest TV characters of all time. The amount of awful things he’s done is staggering when you think about it.

While there was a lot of “Hey! This is the last show!” moments (like the revolution around the last dinner table) I’m happy with general feel at the end. You know that everyone is still going, it’s just that this saga is over. While everyone is going their separate ways, they could still be in contact with each other. Some people have changed and for the most part there isn’t a smoldering wreckage left behind in their relationships.

They of course did get away with murder. Dumping that last woman, the investigation surrounding Escobar was barely a mention. A big sticking point for me is that we never got a sense for Sean’s relationship with his two youngest kids. Especially Conner who was more of an after thought since his hand surgeries were complete. The kids always took a back seat on the show (Matt did get a lot of screen time) but the last scene where the kids leave dinner, it was like “everyone give the extras a round of applause!”. I never got the feeling that Sean would miss Conner at all since he never saw the kid.

Nip/Tuck has had it’s ups and downs to say the least, but it’s still one of my favorite TV shows ever made. I’m going to watch the first 2 seasons again soon to walk down memory lane again. While it’s time is certainly done, I am going to miss looking forward to new episodes.

Nip/Tuck finale

I just finished the last episode, I really have to think about what I watched. Really weird watching the end of a story you started watching 7 years ago.

I actually waited a day to watch it so I could still have a new N/T to see for just a little longer.
