Game Over Man! Game Over!

Last night the Rangers lost to the Lighting in game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals 2-0. A shut out after delivering a 7-3 beating in game 6. Such an unjust end, I’m still annoyed almost 24 hours later. I can’t even bring myself to look up a picture as a header for this post.

The better team did win. This series made no sense at all as it oscillated back and forth every single game. Close calls and blow outs every other game. Game 7 turned out to be game 5 almost exactly, which is just infuriating. Nothing worked for the Rangers (I think injuries and exhaustion finally caught up with them like in 2012), it was so hard to watch. Tampa locked down their defense, the Rangers too slow on the uptake and when a mistake happened, Tampa was all over it. Rangers struggled with Power Plays all season and it’s partially what did them in. Zooks getting hurt 2 months ago along with Nash and MStL going cold in the playoffs really cut off options. I thought for sure they’d get at least back to back Conference wins heading into the playoffs.

It’s a big chunk of disappointment after an amazing run. Best season in franchise history, and three rounds of exciting playoffs.  Looking back at it, I’ve watched just about every Ranger game in the last 6 months with the real chance of winning the Stanley Cup for the first time in 21 years. Now part of the disappointment is not having a game to look forward to watching. Tampa will play either the Ducks or Blackhawks (that will be decided tonight, Blackhawks rallying to push a game 7) but without a pony in the race I find it hard to care much.

I’d like to see the hockey season be cut by about 2 weeks or so. The Cup should be awarded in the middle of May, it’s just too much of an endurance race with 82 regular season games. Not to mention hockey in the summer is weird. Everyone is beat to hell and exhausted, championships shouldn’t be decided on players being held together with athletic tape and running on fumes.

Now all that’s left on is baseball. I’m not into watching grass grow so I’ll just hang up my jersey and bullhorn until the 2015-2016 NHL season in October. We’ll get ’em next year.

Xbox Music

Microsoft recently released their Xbox Music service to the public. At this moment the software is out for the Xbox only, in about a week it’s going to come with all Windows 8 products. It’s the second or third relaunch of their services (laying Zune to rest) and it’s good. But something really bothers me about it.

The continued penny pinching of the Xbox user base. Xbox Music is direct competition to Spotify, Last fm, Pandora and the others in the army of internet radio. All of these services are well entrenched with their users and many (namely Spotify) work on a huge array of devices. Xbox Music is going to only work on Microsoft devices for at least 6 months. It’s going to be the center of Windows 8 for music. You’ll be able to stream internet music for free, just like Pandora and Spotify with commercials (you can also purchase music), or go through the pay wall for the premium ad free, unlimited skipping service (called Xbox Music Pass). That sounds great and the software is pretty slick, no other program looks like it and it makes itunes look pretty ancient.

Here comes the stupid. Without the Music Pass, this services is gimped and useless on the Xbox. You can only listen to 30 seconds of a song. It’s an elaborate preview service. With the pass, you can actually use it the way it’s intended. You also have to have a gold membership to use this service. The money hoops for this on Xbox are completely insulting. This new service is made and run by Microsoft, why on Earth should a Xbox Gold member, who is paying upwards of $60 a year be required to pay MORE? Add it as another value to getting a Gold membership! This is a fledgling service that needs to impress people enough to drop whatever music service they already live with. That’s hard enough to do without giving people reasons NOT to use it. Anyone without Windows 8 is pretty much locked out as well…it’s not going to come to Windows 7. The loophole is that the Music Pass works with the Zune software but the amount of people using that is pretty small AND it’s not using the new design so the interface is a different experience (although the Xbox Music UI is heavily based on the Zune software).

The value that Microsoft is giving to it’s loyal player base just keeps getting smaller and smaller. The $10 hike for Xbox Gold membership was shady enough, this is just unbelievable greed. Lucky for Microsoft, Nintendo still has their head up somewhere above the clouds for their network, so that’s still no worry. They can even continue to point and laugh. Sony on the other hand just keeps making the right moves. They’ve matched many of Xbox Live’s features (for free) and the PS+ membership is a great value idea.

My plea to the powers at be in Redmond, WA: Stop trying to squeeze your fans out of every single dime, it’s going to come back and bite you. With the next generation looming on the horizon, you need to get all your ducks in a row. You better quality test that thing because EVERYONE is going to be watching for you to do a header into the dirt and you’ll be the ones responsible for a mass exodus from the Xbox platform.

Crash!

Got into my first car accident yesterday. In Paramus, I had to stop behind a Honda CR-V who wanted to make a shady left hand turn (double yellow line, but there are no signs that say you can’t do it. I’m not sure if you’d get pulled over if a cop saw you…it’s a super shady turn to want to do). It was raining and a Pontiac Aztec didn’t stop in time and rear ended me.

I heard tires screech, then silence, then POW *shattered glass flying*. I first thought a grenade went of near my car, it was such a weird sound and physical sensation. I didn’t move too much, the entire car shook as the energy shot through it from back to front. My lower back feels tweaked, but I think I got pretty lucky. The other driver was fine and her car had no damage. The spare tire was shoved a couple inches into the door, so the glass is totally gone and the door is dented in all around the tire. Not sure if the spare got messed up, it probably did though. I’ll find out tomorrow. I was surprisingly calm through the whole thing, but it was such a shock, that’s what’s sticking with me. The woman was really upset, she admitted it right away that she was in the wrong.

Pain in the ass having to go through the insurance system, hopefully everything goes smoothy and I’ll have my car back into new condition. Figures, the day after I finally get the tire pressure light to completely reset. That was annoying and now this. Hey, no hospital and my car still works fine so any moaning sounds kinda silly.

UPENN Stupidity

This story has absolutely blown up this week and is just hard to believe grown men in a position of power and leadership could be so fucking stupid.

Now all the facts aren’t out, the path of what happened in the passed 15 years (!) on this alleged creep, Jerry Sandusky, aren’t entirely known. It’s safe to say that the complete story is going to come out in the next few months and is going to be much worse and even more mindboggling.

This has nothing to do with football.

Without rambling on too much (there is a ton to this) and to get to my real point, how did this not stop at Mike Mcqueary’s shower sodomy discovery? There’s a hierarchy at that school and mental path that I can’t wrap my head around. From what I’ve read, Sandusky had the heat turned on him for some similar shady allegations in the late 90’s that ended up fizzling out with the authorities. It was about a year later that he retired. 3 years later is when Mcqueary caught him violating the boy. Mcqueary then calls his dad and LEAVES? He does nothing to help the kid? The next day he tells head coach JoePa (and I’m not sure what kind of detail he went into with Joe). Joe goes up a level in the school administration, which ends up going to the president of UPenn. At no time were the cops called. The “punishment” for Sandusky was that he could not bring kids on campus anymore. What? This monster was skipping around campus as of last week! Somewhere in that chain of events and executive decision some things really went wrong.

I absolutely agree that the men who did nothing to stomp this monster out of the public and into a jail cell should be shown the door. For some reason it looks like the media is focusing mostly on JoePa, which I don’t agree with. Let’s point the brunt of the burners on Sandusky (how the hell did this guy get BAIL? He’s not a risk to the public?!) Mcqueary is a dumb son of a bitch as far as I can tell. UPenn is suppossed to have the utmost pride and ethic code around, it’s insane this happened.

Why did Mcqueary think that his bosses were the authority on a heinous crime? Was he afraid of losing his job for outing a pedophile? At the very least couldn’t he have made an annomous 911 (or campus security) call to get the cops to come and investigate? How did he do NOTHING to help the boy? This just just makes him an accomplice along with the rest of the administration that was told and did nothing.

I don’t understand what the end game of their thinking was. How could not going to the cops and getting Sandusky locked up be bad? They thought this would never come out and be a million times worse? This is Freddy Krueger territory! There are 8 known victims as of now, possibly reaching into other states! They could easily have just oust Sandusky and say they had no clue what he was hiding for all these years. THAT is how you protect your industry, school, reputation, faculty, staff and students. We found out and acted immediately to one of the biggest crimes in society. He doesn’t represent the school, we cooperate with the cops to get all this under control etc. It becomes a story of one heinous individual who got caught and stopped by sane human beings and not a napalm bomb years later. Each on of the men with their heads on the chopping block would a)not be arrested and/or b) fired! JoePa could coach for as long as his heart desired and not have his legacy ruined in a trainwreck of national and world news coverage. Sandusky went on to hurt more kids!

What happened?

I locked my keys in the car

For the first time in my 12 year driving history. I always do the same thing, take the keys out and put them in my left pocket and lock the car with the button door on my way out. I think I got distracted today after I paired my new phone (Droid 3! Really dig it) to my stereo. I realized I could send my music on my phone to the car wirelessly and it sounds amazing. I was so psyched I just left the keys in the ignition like a complete tool. Didn’t realize it till I was getting ready to leave work. Dad came by with the spare remote door open (gotta find the spare key!). Did some extra time at work so it wasn’t the complete disaster it could have been.

Why is Ticketmaster set up this way?

Ordered Mayhem Festival Tickets on June 4th. I still haven’t recieved them in the mail yet. Safe to say they are lost in the mail. If you call TM, they say they can cancel those tickets and you can pick them up at the venues’ box office the day of the show. Kinda dumb. Emailing TM, they can switch your mail order to TicketFast, which is they email it to you and you print it out. Except they are so insanely slow in replying to emails! Why the hell do the phone agents and the email agents use 2 different systems? The phone agents can’t switch it to TicketFast for some idiotic reason, only box office pickup. Who thought that was a good idea? Since the tickets were so cheap I went all in and got VIP parking, which are also lost. So that’s great, I’ll probably need to park on the moon, hoof it to get all the shit that should already be in my hand, then go back to the moon and drive to my reserved spot. What a pain in the ass.

I sent the first email on July 6th. Got a reply back on the 8th. I asked a question back (which was a mistake, instead of just giving the info they needed to switch to TicketFast). After waiting 2 days I sent another reply with my info on the 10th. I got a reply to my question (that was sent on the 8th) on the 14th. I sent the info again on the 14th in a panic thinking they didn’t get my other email with the info they wanted or they just have their head up their ass. Either is possible. So the 14th was the last response and it’s now the 20th and still nothing.

Why is this process so backwards? I just want to show up and have fun, not worry about jumping through 6 hoops when I get there.

Not a happy Verizon customer

To make a long story short:
A month or so ago I upgraded my cell plan to unlimited data for 60 a month. With taxes and shit, it got to like 80 bucks. The service BLEW. It was like being on the internet in 1994 on a 2 inch screen. Slow, nothing loaded right. I had that shit for a week and called Verizon to change it back to how I had it. I said change it now exactly to how it was before, this “upgrade” is insulting. So I go on my merry way and now I find out that she didn’t make the change until the next billing cycle started (3/5). So for some asinine reason my text plan wasn’t unlimited and I’m being charged 80 bucks for overages. That’s about 800 text messages that I’m suddenly paying for. What kind of bullshit is that?

Hey, I get a 10% “inconvenience refund” though! My contract doesn’t end until Jan 2010…

Opie and Anthony in trouble (again)

Going on 2 weeks ago, Opie and Anthony had a guest on the show. “Homeless Charlie” told sorid tales from the streets of NYC using colorful language. It was on the XM portion of the show, so it all went over the air like it should of. He turned out to be a great guest, he was really funny and added a great portion to the show. So much so, that he was given an open invite to come back whenever he wanted to.

During the conversation, he said he wanted to have sex with Queen Elizibeth, Condoleeza Rice and one other broad. He used some colorful language and the boys riffed on that for a bit. The show went on as usual. Turns out that XM didn’t like what was said and freaked out. Opie and Anthony made a canned apology at the start of that Fridays show for it. Then on Monday, they talked about it more and said it was pretty much bullshit.

Cue XM freaking out again. They suspended the show for 30 days, taken the program off channel 202 entirely, making it 24/7 Ron and Fez. A tidal wave of cancellations came into XM for it, somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-40,000 (me being one of them). This is something that we’d expect from CBS, not XM.

So the big fuss is really over the potential XM/Sirius merger. They don’t want any negative attention, they don’t want regulatory hearings to happen, they want the merger to go through ASAP. O and A were seen by the company as a liability in this regard and made them shut up, it just so happens that it was in the worst way possible. So an XM show was censored. The whole reason for sat radio flew out the window. The whole reason I was paying for radio flew out the window.

Now the boys may be back on XM after the 30 days, but they’re CBS show has taken a noticeable downward shift. Opie and Anthony now aren’t sure what they can even say, would they want to go back to XM? Would they be allowed to say what they want or would they be put on lock down, completely neutering the show? The big rumor is that they will in fact be let go, leaving the 100 million dollar Stern to be the talk “entertainer” on the merged satellite radio company. Just the thought of that makes me sick.

Freedom of Speech and Hypocricy

Who knew the words “Nappy headed hos” could cause such an upheaval in America. A throw away comment (which may also go down as the biggest bomb of a joke in recorded history) by radio personality Don Imus has gotten him fired from CBS Radio. Leading the charge are the always righteous Reverands, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

With the speed of a rocket ship hell bent for Mars, Sharpton and Jackson have rushed to the side of the Rutgers Womans Basketball team, who were apparently “scarred for life” by Imus’s comment. With history repeating itself, Sharpton and Jackson have whipped this incident to an unbelievable level.

My problem is this: Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson should be the furthest people harping on about Imus being a racist, a bigot and in general, a horrible person. All of their claims and remarks can be turned right around and pointed back at themselves with their history of inflammatory remarks and clear cut racism. It’s ridiculous.

The crux of this is the “Nappy Headed Hos” line. Some believe Imus said this with hate, to be racist and to put the Rutgers team down based on their skin color (in the past week this has blown up to him being sexist as well). The level of disgust on this comment ranges greatly on where you look. Some wanting Imus’ head on a stick and the vast majority of people scratching their heads wondering what the big deal is (all the polls that I’ve seen from media outlets show that the majority of people don’t think Imus should have been fired). Everyone can agree that it was a stupid comment and he shouldn’t have said it. It was unnecessary and unfunny (he did say it as a joke. In the context of what he was saying and HOW he said it, it was clearly a joke. The intent is very important here). Many people don’t like Imus, he can be a bully, he speaks his mind, he’s old. He’s been doing this for 40 years people know what he’s like, respect him for it and thus, listen to his program.

So, following Imus’ comments the sea starts to churn as the Reverends cannon ball into the water and the stupid media goes into a frenzy like a shark sensing chum in the water. Imus apologized (and sincerely, I believe) on television (he even went on Sharptons radio show to address this) and it’s not enough. Sharpton still demanded that he be fired.

Imus is human and humans make mistakes. Just like our good Reverends here who have many events recorded in their pasts that are far beyond what Imus has ever said or done. One of the biggest being The Tawana Brawley case from 1987.

Take a look at that. Sharpton knowingly backed up a liar for his own personal agenda based on race. He made WILD accusations of people and was later sued for it. He lost that suit, never apologized and never paid up. One of the prosecutors (Maddox)that sided with Sharpton was even disbarred over this! He never showed up for a disciplinary hearing over his conduct on this case. And Tawana Brawley skipped out to Virgina with $300,000 that was from people who donated the money because they wanted to help a girl that was apparently brutalized. How’s that for honesty and morals?

This also mimics the recent Duke Lacrosse rape case. Last year a black prostitute accused some of the Duke lacrosse team that they raped her. They were found innocent this same week. Jesse Jackson sided with this lying whore (which she actually is, she lied and her profession is a prostitute) solely based on race. With NO PROOF whatsoever, Jackson was by her side condemning these innocent men of a heinous crime. There is video of Jackson on Hannity and Combs (if I remembering the correct show) saying that he was going to give the accuser money for a scholarship and that he was going to help her get through this ordeal. When asked about “being innocent until proven guilty” and what if the men are innocent, Jackson replied similar to, “The evidence shows that they are not innocent.” At that time there WAS NO EVIDENCE. She was constantly changing her story and now through the courts it’s proven that she lied and it never happened. This almost ruined these three young mens’ lives! These were serious accusations brought against them and it was all for a cash run and Jackson sits in the brief lime light with it. Since this happened the same week as Imus it’s been pretty much buried along with the deaths of more of our people and friends over seas in the Middle East (barely a mention of that suicide bomber that got into the Pakistani government building). Jackson has pretty much disappeared on this issue since it’s blown up in his face and he owes those kids an apology (the prosecutor is probably going to be investigated by the NC Bar Association for his conduct during the interrogation of the accused Duke players).

Since this is all about the so called racist remarks that Imus said, how about these gems from Jesse Jackson? He was “sick and tired of hearing about the Holocaust”; that there are “very few Jewish reporters that have the capacity to be objective about Arab affairs”. In January 1984 during a conversation with Washington Post reporter, Milton Coleman, he referred to Jews as “Hymies” and to New York City as “Hymietown.” Al Sharpton stuck his foot in his mouth with this line from the Freddie’s Fashion Mart incident where he said “We will not stand by and allow them to move this brother so that some white interloper can expand his business.” Be sure to check out the Crown Heights Riot fiasco where Sharpton helped to fan the flames and ended up with an innocent man being killed by a mob chanting “Kill the Jew”.

Another off color (and really insulting) remark that occurred more recently was from famous loudmouth Rosie O’Donnell. The “Ching-Chong” remark. After a well publicized appearance by an intoxicated Danny Devito on the View, she said, “”You know, you can imagine in China it’s like, ‘Ching-chong, ching-chong. Danny DeVito. Ching-chong, ching-chong-chong. Drunk. The View. Ching-chong.'” After some pathetic attempts at an apology, she was never fired. And what did her freaking publisist say for her? “”She’s a comedian in addition to being a talk show co-host. I certainly hope that one day they will be able to grasp her humor.” OH REALLY. It get’s better folks! A bit later, Rosie made this statement in her defense on The View, “To anyone who was offended at my Chinese, Asian, pseudo-Japanese, sounded a little Yiddish accent that I was doing, you know, it was never [my] intent to mock, and I’m sorry for those who felt hurt or were teased on the playground….But I’m also gonna give you a fair warning that there’s a good chance I’ll do something like that again, probably in the next week — not on purpose. Only ’cause it’s how my brain works.” Can you hear my eyes rolling? Because I can hear yours. And that’s just one instance of her insane comments since she started on The View less than a year ago. Looking at what’s happened to Imus, she still has her job because…?

In addition you have others piping up that just have no buisness doing so. Al Roker? Shut it, your claim to fame is standing underneath an umbrella. Snoop Dog? Has led a sordid past and he’s been allowed to say all sorts of stuff in his songs and profits from it everyday! He gets into legal trouble all of the time for guns, violence and drugs and he has endorsements for all sorts of stupid shit! I love ya Snoop, but how big was that check from Orbits gum? Or Boost Mobile? Imus says one stupid thing and gets raked across the coals for it? Why? And Whoopi Goldberg! Oh my lord. She’s a comedian herself, and backed Ted Danson when he did a bit at her roast in the mid 80’s that he did in black face. He even went so far as to do the watermelon stereotype! She stood by Danson for doing a MUCH worse joke (that’s what he said, that’s the context he said he did it in and she agreed with him).

See what I’m getting at here? It’s hypocrisy in it’s ugliest mask, parading around like he’s got all the right answers. How can Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson condemn Imus for a fraction of language that they have more than done themselves? Aren’t they reverends? I think if that word is said before your name, you are. Doesn’t that mean they follow Jesus teachings of love and (wait for it) forgiveness?

It’s unbelievable how this has snowballed out of control. The Rutgers girls are riding this publicity wave (I’m convinced they’ve been talked into being “offended” and to go along for the ride). I’d bet money that these same women have been called and teased worse by their siblings and peers more times than they can count. It’s safe to say that when they were told what Imus said, their first reaction was “Who’s Imus?” followed by, “Whatever”.

This is now leading us right into the hip hop industry. Imus’ demographic skews so high he’s not really relevant to most of the public. And even so, name another person who has the diversity of guests on his show talking about a wealth of topics and has done the charity work that Imus has done in last 20+ years (hint: it’s not Al or Jesse). Oh and I tip my hat at the scumbags at MSNBC for dropping his show the day before his annual fund raiser for helping kids with cancer. Touch of class cutting off a big source of donations. Thank god for the movement that radio show hosts Opie and Anthony started.

It comes down to a “We want to be able to say things that you can’t” based solely on if the person is black or not. That’s a fact echoed by recent comments by both Sharpton and Jackson. Look at what urban radio stations say on the air, they get away with murder (listen to Hot 97 in NY or Steve Harvey’s beyond awful program sometime). It’s a double standard that is complete bullshit. Equality means being equal for everyone, it doesn’t work any other way. Rap music is full of violence, drugs and misogyny. These musicians are looked up to by generations of people. They help shape popular culture and beliefs. Instead of going after a dope like Imus, real issues need to be addressed. Black on black crime is still a huge problem, education needs to be addressed (why are kids who are trying to get an education and make something of their lives being harassed? The whole “Uncle Tom” mentality is self destructing the black community). New black leaders need to be found and appointed, Sharpton and Jackson are only in it for themselves, relics of a time long gone by. They bully and threaten people to get their way.

In this country free speech should never be threatened. What Imus said wasn’t an FCC violation and threating someones lively hood because of what a person means there is no free speech. Let’s be perfectly clear on this: Everyone regardless of race, sex and creed has the right to say what they want. Who made the two biggest hypocrites the language police? They don’t and can’t determine what a person can say, especially due to the persons skin color. Rappers should have the right to write, say and use the language they want to. Just like Imus and the rest of America has. You can’t just cut out a group of people on some bullshit like this, there is no foundation for an argument. It’s racism and segregation, plain and simple. At this point in history, this country does not need anything else to divide us. We need to be able to communicate, get along and understand each other more than ever. Building walls between people is the worst thing to do. Watch how this rolls right up to hip hops doorstep and knocks it over.
